Okay, that was kind of a silly way to ask it, but here's my question: I am using cable internet and downloading a 6 MB file (Opera web browser installer), and it's taken several minutes.
IE 7.0 says the file is downloading at only about 12 KB/sec. But the Network Magic internet speed test says my download speed is over 10 MB/sec, nearly 10 times faster.
So if my download speed is 10 MB/sec, why is the file downloading at only 12 KB/sec? And what can I do about it?

It take 2 to tango, so it may have been just the Opera site that was slow or the "mirror" you chose to download from.
You may have a 10Mbps connection BUT the Opera site may not be able to sustain that speed because it is trying to service too many cutomers at once.
Test it on multiple sites
When I went to the Opera Website to download it, they happen to have like 20 download sites to choose from.
Try downloading something from Microsoft.com (OR fileplanet if you're into games), etc. -- This will hopefully test if it's slowness on the other end or not.
Also realize that your Cable Internet Provider, like all ISPs rate their connection in MegaBITS not MegaBYTES. Windows generally displays download speeds in KiloBYTES not KiloBITS.
The difference between a BIT and a BYTE is a factor of 8, as there are 8 bits to every byte.
So your 6Mb connection probably translates into 750KBps downloads.. because you need to divide your ISPs number by 8 then by 1000 to convert to KBs.

When your internet connection is defined as, say, 8Mb/s, this is different to 8MB/s: b is bits, B is bytes. Bytes are 8 bits, so the actual real download speed in megabytes per second, the standard unit of measurement, is 8 times slower than the advertised connection speed, which by itself is only reached in some areas: my broadband connection is about 2/3Mb/s, when it should be 'up to' 8.

Basically your ISP download is fine...you have a 30" dia pipe, but the site you downloading limit their download rate to 1/10 of that. Lastly, if you download in early morning or late at night...those time are faster since there is less traffic.
Reply:actaully its nearly 1000 times faster aproximately 1000kb=1mb but anyway it might be that you are trying to download several things at once and they are splitting the bandwidth or you might be on a network and other people are using the connection and you are splitting the bandwidth with them, or you could have alot of spyware, viruses and stuff of that nature, it could be several different things.
Reply:Just because your line is CAPABLE of downloading 10/mb second, doesnt mean the sender on the other end is CAPABLE of sending it to you at 10/mb second.
The transfer only goes as fast as its slowest part.
Your car is CAPABLE of 100 mph. That doesnt mean it ALWAYS drives at 100mph.
You have to contend with all the other traffic on the net as well.
What can you do? Nothing, thats the way it is.

Downloading MIcrosoft Service Pack 2. Extremely Slow Download?
I just got my PC reformatted from a PC business. I'm using the Microsoft Automatic Updates to Upgrade and download the Serrvice Pack 2. It Get's about 1/2 way done and basically stops downloading, or downloads EXTREMELY slow. My PC is brand new, no spyware...Anybody can help me out??

That happened to me before. The issue was with my harddrive, it continued to have spotty memory, and loose bits of data. Everything was great after I got it replaced, and the O.S. installed cleanly.

I can't download my photos to Kodak. I'm using adobe photoshop elements. I disabled my firewall but no luck!
I keep getting a message saying "There is a problem with your internet connection. Please check that a firewall is not blocking photoshop elements from accessing the internet and that you have an internet connection". I have a connection and disabled my firewall long enough to download. Every once in a while it will allow me to downlaod one picture without a problem. I use to download photos without a problem. Things that have changed are I got a 10 megapixel camera vs the 5.3 megapixel camera I use to use and I got McAfee secruity virus protection. I don't think it is the camera because I took some pictures with my old camera and tried to download. I received the same error. I also tried downloading straight from the kodak website instead of using photoshop to download from and I get a failure to upload message. I have DSL (SBC/AT%26amp;T) if that helps anyone answer my question of how can I get my photos to Download?

Is there any type of bittorrent client that allows you to convert the files inside the torrent as it downloads? Like say I was downloading a torrent with a movie in it (somemovie.avi) but I wanted the video file to be in mp4 format. You can download videos from google video. Every time i try it starts download fast then gets really slow. Then when its about 10% download it says download complete. Trying to download limewire...?
on windows 2000, had it a couple months ago then unistalled it and a couple other things trying to rid a virus, and now im trying to download it from the site and i get all the way to the point to where it asks me what operating system i want to download for and i click on it and the page freezes for about a minute and then goes back to normal but nothing ever pops up to download, dont have a pop up blocker so thats not it, downloaded the latest version of java and that did nothing, and i have no problem downloading anything else of the web just limewire, any suggestions as to why this is is happening, thanks in advance!

But in the first 5 minutes of downloading (when like 5% is downloaded) it ends and when I try to play it the data is corrupt. I just downloaded FlashGet to download work files late at night because I have the highest speed then. Here's my question. My computer is on sleep mode at that time. Will it wake up and download at 3:00 am or do I need to leave it on all night w/ a screensaver instead in order for it to download? If it's like my antivirus, it doesnt download updates until I resume activity on the next day if it isn't for the scheduled time.

I use windows xp and vista both, when i am downloading files to my computer on vista i can close out all internet explorer and still be downloading files, but with XP if i am downloading files and i close out the internet explorer the download also quits, is there a way or something that i can configure to all the file to continue downloading even after i close out all internet explorer pages on XP Home Edition

I am currently downloading Darwin for Mac emulation (useless info). When I started the download it said the file was about 400 MB, and the download is now up to 515 MB and no end in sight. Does anybody know how to find out how long I need to let this run (how big the actual file is or how to fix this problem)?

I'm using uTorrent at the moment and I'm not experiencing very fast download speeds - nothing like as fast as when I first changed to my current ISP (Sky) about three or four months ago. I've checked on uTorrent and I have forwarded my ports properly (I have a nice green tick) and I've done a speed test (http://www.speedtest.net) and my download speed is showing what it should - about 5650kbps. Yet, when I'm downloading I can only get around 110kbps.
I tried changing my port that uTorrent uses last night, but I'm still having problems. What could be causing this?
About three months ago I may have gone over my download limit so I could I be being capped?

There's a lot of reasons why download speeds are not very fast on a torrent downloader software. Other than changing your port, it depends how many seeds it has. Usually, the more seeds it has, the faster the file downloads. Peers are other users who are connected and seeding the file and for you and everyone who downloads the file that they are seeding. So the more peers you connect with, the more it speeds the download rate up. Another thing is that downloading multiple files can sometimes, if not most of the time, decrease the speed of each file's download rate. Downloading one file while the others are paused will definitely increase that one file's rate up. Of course, it depends what kind of internet speed you have. If you have DSL, then it explains why it's not very fast. If you are using cable or any connection higher than cable, then you're fine. It all depends on how many seeds and peers you connect with.

I'm using uTorrent at the moment and I'm not experiencing very fast download speeds - nothing like as fast as when I first changed to my current ISP (Sky) about three or four months ago. I've checked on uTorrent and I have forwarded my ports properly (I have a nice green tick) and I've done a speed test (http://www.speedtest.net) and my download speed is showing what it should - about 5650kbps. Yet, when I'm downloading I can only get around 110kbps.
I tried changing my port that uTorrent uses last night, but I'm still having problems. What could be causing this?

There's a lot of reasons why download speeds are not very fast on a torrent downloader software. Other than changing your port, it depends how many seeds it has. Usually, the more seeds it has, the faster the file downloads. Peers are other users who are connected and seeding the file and for you and everyone who downloads the file that they are seeding. So the more peers you connect with, the more it speeds the download rate up. Another thing is that downloading multiple files can sometimes, if not most of the time, decrease the speed of each file's download rate. Downloading one file while the others are paused will definitely increase that one file's rate up. Of course, it depends what kind of internet speed you have. Why can't I download battlefield 2 demo?
Every time I try to download battlefield 2, it begins downloading until it has downloaded 1.50 MB exactly, and then it stops. This occurrs every time no matter what server i try downloading it from, and then it always says the same message after the download box closes: "Internet Explorer cannot download Battlefield_2_Demo_GC.zip from softwarex-files.download.com. If the tracker is down you can't download the file as the tracker has the references to the sources (for the file).

Firefox's built-in download manager sucks. IE's isn't all that great either. I really liked orbit for the speed and efficiency of it, but my computer has demoted me to a restricted user, and i can't install it. DownThemAll is cool is your downloading a single web page, but it's much slower, and more memory-consuming. Flash-Get had something similar to Orbit, but it started giving all this error crap and refused to work. Internet Download Manager is okay, but pretty much chokes on downloading web sites.
So my question is, where do I turn for fast speeds, low memory consumtion, and mass-downloads? Thanx.

accordin to internet average is 3kbps-7kbps and my friend even downloads faster than me. i dont think its the website or the location of the download because i download at 2.60kbps-2kbps and sometimes even lower all the way to less than 1kbps. someone please help if there are any download tools out there for free or some settings i can mess with please tell me! thank you

Everytime I download anything I make sure it goes to my desktop. Once the download has finished it automatically deletes itself from the computer. No trace is found when a search of whole computer is done. Is there anyway I can fix this please with in the settings anywhere? The computer I have is about 5 months old and has original version of Vista home basic. Have tried setting up a folder in my docs with sub directory of my downloaded file and still empty when download has completed. No matter where I safe the down looad the result is the same. When I try to download songs from websites there is an option click to download. But when I click them it automatically opens Windows Media Player and starts playing but it doesn't download. What you can do is this.
First click on to the download button.
Second: once its start playing on windows media player, right click and safe the URL.
Third: Go to your own windows media player in your computer and paste the URL there. It is located under one of the toolbars there. Should be under properties or under the open or search URL Coulomb.
Four: once the song starts playing you can only save the song once the progress bar reaches 100% then quickly safe it to your computer.

I've seen alot of questions with people curious on how to download videos from youtube.Here's the answer.
omg this is gonna take alot of typing lol i dwnload vids from youtube all the time.
1.download replay converter
2.download orbit downloader
3.get on youtube
4.go to the video you wanna download
5.when you put your mouse over the video it should show something that says "Get It" click on it
6.wait for it to finish downloading
7.open up orbit downloader
8.right click on the video file
9.move it to "My Documents"
10.open up replay converter
11.add the file video from my documents
12.click on convert video
13.select wmv file (any quality) from the scroll list
14.start conversion job
15.Wait and you should have the video(but some of the end of the video won't be on it).

After i download sims 2 stuff, how do i get it in the game??
Ok, i want to download some stuff from the sims2 website to use in my sims2 game. Once i download the stuff where does it go and how to i get it in my actual sims2 game to use?? Once its in the game will it just go to the obvious place to find it (example: if i download a sim, will they be in the family bin or in create a family or if i download a bed, will it be with the rest of the beds under furniture?) I just dont know how to get the download into the game and where to find it once its in there. any help would be greatly appreciated, im not great with these technical computer things (so the easiest way-if there is one-would be the best). When you download objects and lots and you go in the Sims 2 game there will be a little star/flower symbol next to the family bin. I think it might ask you to connect to the Sims 2 website and then you can view the stuff that you've downloaded and add it to your game.

Hi.
My first question at yahoo answers! :D
I have DAP v8.5.6.3 (Latest), downloaded and installed from the official website.
Whenever there is only 1 Item in Que to download, it works fine.
But as soon as there are multiple items in que, DAP downloads the first part and crashes and exits after the first part.
I've checked the settings and all is fine.
Please help me solve this issue.

I bought it and when I download the quicktime and zimio reader(and yes the quicktime is the verison i need) and it takes me to a page blank gray screen. ok so this is what happens......I'm trying to download my game World Of Warcraft onto my new computer i just got and when i put in the disk and load it up it ask where would i like to download my files and i created a new folder in my C drive to put Wow in so i click on that folder in the C drive and press ok and the game starts to download but i get a warning saying i don't have enough disk space so i look in my computer to see what the heck and my C drive has all of it's 72G space but when i look in my D drive it has about 5Mb when it should about 2 gigs. Can someone please tell me how to get the game to download to the C drive or at least tell me how to make me C drive my primary downloading spot, i retry'd downloading it 3 times and it does the same thing everytime...please help

I am using safari on OSX- sometimes when i click an mp3 download link, wanting to download an mp3 file off a site, it will simply open it in quicktime and not download it.
when i click on the same link in internet explorer (on my desktop pc), it downloads it automatically.

The link you are clicking on is to a file on a web server so it is supposed to open in a web page of Safari or Firefox, whichever you are using. QuickTime plugin is what makes the file play music, video or whatever. It is not the actual QuickTime application that opens (look at the Dock and you will see that QuickTime is not open).

I download music from iTunes, but I can only use it for my iPod, it's not compatible with anything else

I can't download pictures and files anymore using Mozilla Firefox , What's the problem ?
Well I would say this problem started about 3-4 months ago. Here's the thing:
When I want to download "B" picture , I right click the image and click "save as" and then I save it in whatever folder I want to save it in. Up to this point every thing works fine but after doing this I notice the absence of the download window that tracks all the recent (and past) downloads.
If I open this window manually (Ctrl+J) None of the downloads I've made appear and don't actually get downloaded (this , however, only applies to pictures). But even the files that DO get downloaded are unseen on the download history !
So as an alternative I just copy the image on paint and save it , but it's getting really irritating.
And the strangest thing is that , this problem only appears on my server of the computer. With my brother's server it works fine.
Help please !

When I downloaded the free trial of WoW there were 2 download icons that popped up. Blizzard downloader and?
the try WoW download icon... I did the blizzard one first and waited awhile. It seemed to download wow in the end but it always says unable to connect when I try to login and all my ports on my computer allow blizzard. At least I think so...thats another question I have... how do you check that your comp is allowing certain ports on your computer? and about the download... I am not able to download more than a specific limit from RapidShare. I am using a site called http://www.ebookism.net/index.php for downloading e-books. Being a student, i cannot afford to pay suck high prices to buy %26amp; learn from those books. So i download free e-books that are located at RapidShare servers. Unfortunately, i run out of download limit every 15 minutes of so and then, i again have to wait for long time before i can start another download. Can anyone help me providing some software with which i can download all the e-books without any glitch ?
Because this is time consuming and hectic job... waiting and then again downloading... I would be really greatful if anyone can help me.

when there was rapidshare.de there were many tweaks available for the users to bypass the time limit and bypass the download limit . and many more.
but now there is rapidshare.com. they have upgraded there engine and security is very tight now..
so some of tweaks are not applicable now

CMS Grabber.. you can search at google and download the program.. it is very usefull . and anothre thing .. search google for fresh proxies list for CMS grabber . that will help u when there comes download limit or time limit .. .

File Download problem MP3 and RapidShare?
New Toshiba laptop, OS = Vista, using RAR to compress files. (www.buyrar.com) is a new problem, never exp. it on old IBM 600E laptop that had XP on it.
It is taking me 3 to 7 attempts to download files often,(sometimes I get it the first attempt, such as MP3,or ebook PDF, files. get the link, save, open, etc.. select save, downloading starts and , often at about 70% of the file downloaded then it just sits there and it will stay like that. (I have left it there for over an hour) yet it says/ shows the download is in progress, amount of time remaining, file going from the spinning earth flying over to a file folder.
It is obvious has stopped downloading yet get no connection lost msg or anything. Is this a Vista, prob, or Toshiba software/hardware, prob? I am wireless in the home. I can still use old laptop and prob. does not exist with it.Your help is appreciated.

hi can anyone help me i have advanced window care on my pc and have tried for the last hour to download it to my lap top i go to download.com select to download it starts to downlaod i selected to run and save but it starts to download to about 15% then the time goes up then stops , i have tried lots of times what could be causing this as when i installed it on my pc it took about 2 minutes to download and install , but at the moment i can't even download it it stops or the time goes up like it says 3 min 25 sec then it goes to 4 min 10 sec etc

Cannot download from bit torrent?
I experience this same problem whenever I try to download through Bittorrent. At first, the download will be fine, and I can see progress there. But then it will just stop downloading, the Upload and Download rate all decrease to 0, and no matter how many times I press Pause and then Start again, it just won't continue the downloading.
Does anyone know what is wrong with this and how do I fix it? I really appreciate anyone who can help.

I just found a solution. I turned windowns firewall off. Now it's working. :-)
Reply:i have same problem. Probably the place where u accessing internet (where the computer that u use for dl torrent), is behind firewall or proxy or somethings like that. This firewall (or the others) closing some port which used by the torrent program. U can't use torrent until u remove it.
Reply:your may need to portforward to your router, or unblock a software firwall.

i click "download"
and then like 5 seconds later it shows (error converting)

I downloaded itube (ares tube) and everytime i download something it says error converting. why is that?
try vixy.net you do not need to download or install any software,its easy to use and you can convert it on the site:
-go to http://vixy.net (copy the URL in the converter)
Convert to AVI for Windows (DivX + MP3).
. Download the video when the link shows (after conversion).

Cannot get messenger to download?
I clicked download, clicked run both times it was displayed, download window comes up, hit continue all the way through to start download, then download status window comes up.
Downloading for 12 hours yesterday and only showed 0%-5% status. Occasionaly showed 100% then goes back to 0% and starts all over again. Does anyone know why it keeps doing this? It does it when I tried to download version 8 and/or 9.
I'm working from a 56K modem with Windows XP. I have tried shutting down and restarting computer, checking for conflicts, disabling firewall, re starting messenger download twice and still no luck. I have been downloading today for three hours already and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Do you download from the sims 2 site?
I downloaded over 100! And I've only had this game and University ex pack since Feb. 2, 2008! But then again, my friend Jennifer download 67 and gave them to me on her USB. So i really didn't download that many myself! The best place to go is www.thesims2.com. Hit exchange sims. Then hit download. Then hit save! Then go to my documents. Go to ea games. Hit the sims 2. Hit saved sims. Double Click your sim that you downloaded. And when you play the game. You will have new clothes, hairstyles, and makeup automaticly downloaded!

i have lots on the exchange :) always modern ones, sims is really good and it is also usefull to me because i can design some buildings on it and i am studying as level tech (im in yr 10 but i am gifted and talented)

My brother goes to all sorts of other websites and downloads custom hair, clothes, skintones, eye color, makeup, lots, etc. There are thousands of other sites out there. You usually have to have the right extraction software to use it, but it is still easy to install. Go to sims2wiki.info for tons of custom content and how to install/use it all.
