Hi, does anyone know where I can download music for free..and legally?
Lots of my friends have limewire and bearshare etc and it's driving me crazy that there are lots of songs I want..but I just can't afford to download them all for 79p a time!
I want the music permanently too.
My parents won't let me download limewire or download illegally..so I'm stuffed really.
Help please?

There aren't any legal and free music download sites that I know of. Limewire, Morpheus, and all those other file-sharing services are usually illegal, that is, if you're downloading copyrighted songs.
You may be able to find some independent musicians with their own websites that provide some free music, but it's not going to be a big name that you'd hear on the radio.
You're best bet is to convince your parents to subscribe to a legal service like Napster, Yahoo! Music, or Rhapsody. There's a monthly fee for these, but at least you're not ripping off the musicians and the music companies.

I've found a website that downloads large files from anywhere on the web for dial up users - Download 4 me, has anyone used this service? What is it like?

I cant say for certain. It seems rather expensive to download a file. Are you in remote location that has no access to highspeed? I found a lot of internet cafe's that were reasonable and seemed fairly fast to dl. The most remote location was Cairn's but I know know Australia is a big place .. :)

I use a dial up connection to connect to internet. Usually the speed shown by my computer is 45kbps but when I download something from internet the download window shows that the speed of downloading is 2kbps. What should I do to increase it.

If I download a demo and want to buy the full version rather than download the full version first. Which way?
would I download faster? I found a game that the demo is smaller in size(MB) than the full version. I guess what I'm trying to say is if I download the demo and purchase when asked if I want to, would it be faster than downloading the full version which is 95.6 MB in size compared to the demo(33MB)?

When you use limewire on a windows PC, it will, by default, create folders in your user profile (c:\documents and settings\your username) called "shared" and "incomplete". Files that are downloaded completely show up in shared, while files that are started but not finished will be inthe incomplete folder. To see these folders, you need to make sure you have Windows Explorer set to view hidden files and folders.

Reply:If there's porn on the temporary internet files folder then the page he was on had to have contained those pictures. 99.9% of the time there are porn pictures he's on a porn site. There's no denying the evidence you have. He just plain lied to your face. Now that is a much bigger issue for you to deal with. In the history folder the actual sites would be listed and most of the time a website will leave a cookie on your computer for the next time you visit. Look for those and that will be the definitive evidence to whether or not he is lying.

The same is true if you don't know the difference between a song that is 25kb in size from one that is 3 mb in size. The smaller one is probably a Trojan, just waiting for you to infect your computer with.
P2P file-sharing is no place for computer novices. Even experienced expert users get infected using P2P at times.
If you must use P2P, always scan every file you download with both your anti-virus and your anti-spyware before you open it.

Bit torrent download speed assistance?
Hi there,
I have a Broadband internet connection of around 512kbps and yet when i download torrents, between around 12pm and 12am the torrents download at around 5-12kb/s and then around 1 or 2am they start downloading at between 40-100 kb/ps. Why is the downloading during the day so slow and tedious and is there anyway to speed up the download speed of torrents on bittorrent. Is bittorrent slow anyway and are there any other torrent sites that allow a much faster d/load rate but still have the same torrent files in them?

bittorrent requires other people with the file your downloading to be online and seeding that file at the time your downloading. Because bittorrent downloads small parts of the file from as much sources as it can at one time, the more people online seeding that file, the faster your download speed will be. When you download speed increases, it means more people have came online uploading the required file, and when it slows down, other seeders have gone off line.

Basically, if you want a file, you have to offer something in return. So when you finish downloading a file, start seeding it (it might happen automatically, depending on your client).
ALSO: The speeds at different times of day vary because of any of the following:

- The time difference (if your file is coming from the USA and you're in Europe - it'll get faster overnight! woo hoo!) [not always guaranteed!]

Download torrent from web is what you should do. However, don't use torrentspy. Just use isohunt.net

Downloading the files without paying for them, no matter what you plan to do with them, no matter what you use to obtain them, is illegal because the artist isn't getting paid for their work. Copyright law was created to make sure that artists get reimbursed for what they create and are therefore able to continue making art instead of having to find other ways to pay the bills. The crime is copyright infringement (do a search on it for details) and the fine is between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file illegally downloaded. What you do with the files can determine the fine. If you're downloading for personal use then you get closer to the $750.00 end. If you attempt to make a profit, it gets closer to the $150,000.00 end.
A jury in Minnesota recently found a woman guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs. They set the fine at $9,000.00 per song. It could happen to you.
As for how to tell is it's copyrighted, use some common sense. If you'd have to pay to get the CD, or to download the tracks at a legitimate store, then getting them for free is illegal.

Reply:Limewire itself is not illegal however they dont take repsonsibility for the material distributed to share.
So therefore if you use it for non copyrighted material you need not worry however most material has copyright and judging by the sucess of limewire, it would seem that not all files shared on the site are completly legal.
It was rumoured that after the case of MGM vs Grokster limewire began working on a program which refused to share files which lacked valid licence information.

If you have limewire set to not share / upload songs, then the RIAA is PROBABLY not gonna come after you in court. Downloading the files without paying for them, no matter what you plan to do with them, no matter what you use to obtain them, is illegal because the artist isn't getting paid for their work. Copyright law was created to make sure that artists get reimbursed for what they create and are therefore able to continue making art instead of having to find other ways to pay the bills. The crime is copyright infringement (do a search on it for details) and the fine is between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file illegally downloaded. What you do with the files can determine the fine. If you're downloading for personal use then you get closer to the $750.00 end. If you attempt to make a profit, it gets closer to the $150,000.00 end.
A jury in Minnesota recently found a woman guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs. They set the fine at $9,000.00 per song. It could happen to you.
As for how to tell is it's copyrighted, use some common sense. If you'd have to pay to get the CD, or to download the tracks at a legitimate store, then getting them for free is illegal.

Now the reality of it? If you're not sharing the songs you're a lower priority. They've got bigger fish to fry. Don't get it into your mind that it isn't illegal though. It's still illegal and if they felt like suing you they could.

Reply:Limewire itself is not illegal however they dont take repsonsibility for the material distributed to share.
So therefore if you use it for non copyrighted material you need not worry however most material has copyright and judging by the sucess of limewire, it would seem that not all files shared on the site are completly legal.
It was rumoured that after the case of MGM vs Grokster limewire began working on a program which refused to share files which lacked valid licence information.

Why are my download speeds so different than dsl speed test results??
I have a 1.5 meg connection and when I test it I get good enough result from cnet and other speed test site of about 1.3 meg/ sec download results. BUT, when I download anything, in anyway including bittorrent my combined download speed maxes out at around 150k/sec. Weirder still itunes says I am downloading songs etc.. at 1.3 megs/sec yet when I watch the number indicating how many megs I have downloaded it obviously takes about 7 secs to download a megabyte which is 150k/sec. What is this disparity?

The advertised specs are usually never obtained unless you are within a few miles from the source. The farther from the source IPS the weaker the signal. It also depends on the type of DSL that was sold to you and the number of users on the service.

Why wont bittorrent download files?
I just downloaded Bittorrent 5.0.2 (for the first time, not an upgrade) and Ive downloaded the .torrent file from the web site, but when I try to download the file it doesnt connect to the user/start the download, I just have the red bar and a 0% download rate.
It says 'Online may be firewalled', my firewall is off and Im not sure how to access my modem options. What do I need to do to get Bittorrent to connect and download the way its supposed to?

rather then disabling the firewall on your PC (which you can usually configure easily enough) you should disable the FW on your (ADSL) MoDem; configuring your (broadband) MoDem is possible but usually not an easy task.
you still will need to find out how to disable the MoDem FW;
look @ the MoDem and type the names and numbers you can see on it into a search engine (http://search.yahoo.com or so)
once you got an clear idea of what the brand and model, add "disable firewall" (between quotes) to it; your preferred choice should be the manufacturer's site (something like www.BRAND.com or so) but the manufacturer may not give out that kind of information and you will have to look for an alternate site.
you can leave the FW on your PC disabled as well (@ least while you are downloading bittorrent files) as your ADSL MoDem will still protect you (you will have a 192.x.x.x IP address, which is not reachable from the I-net)

How Do I download RBT's on my Samsung Glyde?
I just got the samsung glyde yesterday and the way you have to download music is really really frustrating. On my other verizon phone I could just download my ringtones and RBTS right through get it now VCAST, but now even though I have a vcast subscription, I can't download any ringtones through vcast, when I push shop ringtones I have to go through Sony Music Box! Which you have to pay for by the use. I'm not understanding why I was only paying for vcast on my other Verizon phone and downloading music, but this ones i have to pay for 2 separate programs just to download a ringtone. Oh and ......I still can't figure out where to go to download RBTS? Help.....did that make any sense?

Lime Wire Download!! Help?
I want to download the basic lime wire. I've tried downloading it and now it's says tht the insallation is corrupted. Please download and install LimeWire again. I tried downloading it several times but i doesn't work. I can't download the old nor the new one. I've been using it like for 3 to 4 years now but this is the first time tht this happens to me.

One of the problems with Limewire is if you try to download on top of already existing version, it won't let you do it.
You have to go into your control menu and delete the Limewire program completly (from the add/remove programs).
When your hard drive is wiped clean of these older Limewire versions, you can then download the newer version.
This happened to me a few times.

Is there a program that will start my downloads at a certain time? I'm playing this game and it usually patches in the morning right when I get to school, and so... When i get home i have to download the program again, which takes a while. To determine ur "real download potential", u just got 2 convert ur kbitsps to kBytesps.
This is simply done by dividing it by 8 (8bits=1Byte). 512kilobits per second = 64kiloBytes per second so if u do the math, a connection speed of 512 kbps would typically take 26minutes(1563sec) to get a file as large as 100MB(1 MegaByte = 1024 kiloByte ~1000 kiloByte).
As for the 1 GB torrent file, w/ torrent as just w/ any other dlding clients, the downld speed is not really that stable. So... my advice 2 u is to just look for the download speed when it starts dlding that file (no need 2 convert cuz d value it displays is KBytesps already). Then, divide 1GB(1 GigaByte = 1024 MegaByte ~1000 MegaByte) by that download speed. The result ur gonna get is basically the time in seconds it will take u 2 dld that file.

100 megs will be 33 minutes.
but really thats if your speed was as fast as it could go.
i have 8meg broadband. so upto 800kb a second. 1 meg in just over a second. but it depends on the remote host/server being able to upload data that fast.
with 20 or so seeders, if eash was seeding 10kbs upload, then the max it would download at is 200kbs, but as yours is only 51.2, that would be the limit

To play maplestory you have to download a game client. There is only one download. You will automatically get the latest version. Once it is installed on your computer and you have registered on the nexon site for an account, you can play maplestory by loading the client.
Maplestory gives regular patches which take up to half an hour to download. You cannot play without downloading these, since they add new areas to the game.
Maplestory is a MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. That means you play alongside a lot of other people. Obviously if each person was on a different version of the game, they could not interact because some players would be allowed to goto different areas.
Once you are signed up I recommend you read some guides on www.hidden-street.net since it has details on all areas of gameplay as well as character builds for each job. Good luck!

Can't download Adobe Flash Player?
I've searched for numerous solutions to my problems here in Answers and tried all of the possible ways to solve it but to no avail.
I can't download the Flash Player from Adobe. I've checked my Security settings and enabled any Activex controls. Everything was fine. I even tried to uninstall my previous Flash Player but even the uninstaller can't load! Some mentioned that i should download Shockwave. I can't download that either!
I tried downloading from places like Filehippo and Download.com and all they came up with is "Internet was not able to open this site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. please try again later"

If u have an valid internet connection and if u r not able to view any of the websites u must contact ur service provider because there will b some problem with ur service provider.
if ur internet is working proper try downloading using torrent.
if u r not aware of torrent go to www.utorrent.com. download utorrent. install it . in the top right corner type in "flashplayer7" press enter. u will get a link click on it then u c flash getting downloaded.
even if this fails try using an good updated antivirus software to clean up ur system or do tis step first and do the rest latter.

Would it download fast if I increased my internet speed to 15Mbps? After all the source of the file is allowing me to download only at a rate of 10kB/s.

Can't Download Messenger 8.0 Or Any Older Versions Please Help!?
I had yahoo messenger, but I was told I needed to upgrade it. the up grade did not completely download because it was interrupted. So I removed all of yahooo from my computer. tried to download it again and I recieved a error message: Download of file has been cancelled or interrupted. File not completely downloaded abort or retry. Retry it and keep getting same message. I do have an aol security center firewall. Do I need to allow the IP Address permision or allow Port permission to the messenger, to download it. If so, can someone please tell me how to do it.

The computer will not let me download any anti spyware anti virus programs, when i try to download things like spybot, it allows me to click download, open the download box then for some reason it says the C://Document blah blah is corrupt and can not be read..

also get and run SPYBOT S%26amp;D from www.spybot.org
Once you have run each of these (update each before runnings, option on front screen of both of them) you should be clear again.
Between them it should get it.

Can you remember how long ago this happened? It might be a clue indicating if you downloaded something nasty. I have had problems similar to this that were simply from conflicts in the programs.
Try booting up in safe mode and scan from there.
You should really try to avoid running two anti virus programs at the same time. They often conflict with each other.
Running multiple firewalls is usually OK and multiple anti spyware normally is OK. It might slow you down but is not noticible most of the time.

Reply:You need to do some hard drive swapping or else open windows in safe mode. You may have to close some processes manually.
Put the hard drive in another computer that has windows. Back up all the files you need, and reformat. Your windows seems pretty much FUBR.

You just have to search for whatever file, audio, video, document, images, software, etc you want and it displays results from the libraries of other users of these softwares. I even download movies and hindi videos using these. You too can try these out as they are avialable for free.
Also, do note that my experience says that for Indian audios and videos, Ares seems to be having a lead over limewire as i get more bollywood results using Ares. Anyways, you can download these here for free:

I need a program that let me resume downloading a file without the need to download it again from the begining if I stop the download in the first place.

Download accelerator is good. But I use Bitcomet cause with it I can do what you asked, but it is also a torrent client, so 2 in one, i guess it's not bad. It also has preview option, which can be usefull when it comes to videos and music files.

I will not "pick-up" were you left off, it will check over everything that you have downloaded of that file in a fraction of the time that it took before, plus it will resume what is going on next. IT SHOULD. Some files if cancled gets sent to a recycled bin because the program is not complete. But there are many softwares that allow a task to stop and start whenever you want it to.

Well, I have looked around here and have found many places for TV shows, but they don't offer you to download them, or they make you pay. So, I can watch the TV shows off of NBC.com, but sometimes I want to watch them on my iPod if I am in the car for a long ride. So I like the show Friday Night Lights, so is there a way I can download the episodes off of NBC.com, or is there somewhere that I can download, with Friday Night Lights on it?

Download speed problem?
my download speed tests show that an average download speed is about 165-170 KB/s. But when I try to download larger files like 400MB, it takes more than 5 hrs at a speed of about 40-50 KB/s?! is this normal? what can i do to improve if there is a way.
this happens not in a torrent download, just regular rapidshare and megaupload type

for downloading torrent file, i use bit commet .07, its ok, but sometimes download speed rate is lower than upload speed, its like download 4k and upload 20 k, i changed the settings but it still is there any third party software to accelerate download speed??

hi. ive been trying to download zettai kareshi from mangatemple and it hasnt been working.
its a file tht has to be extracted by WinRAR nd i hav the program.
the problem is, the download gets to around 10% and then it says it has finished downloading (i use firefox) so i go into it.
WinRAR then has a thing that pops up and says: 'unexpected end of archive'.
im wondering if this is my problem or the sites? coz i can download WinRAR stuff from other sites perfectly fine..
and does a slow internet effect anything? coz i kinda busted mi usage this month..heh ^-^

the problem is, the download gets to around 10% and then it says it has finished downloading (i use firefox) so i go into it.

Cant complete download of PDF file: Format Error :Not a PDF or corrupted?
Download process begins ok, then after about 200 to 500 KB of the download, the screen freezes white then several seconds later get error msg above. Same thing happens with Foxit or Adobe Reader. Using 48.8 dial-up. This particular file downloads
ok from the public library with hi-speed. Note : the Foxit User MAnual, very large file, about 2 meg, downloads ok from my home pc with Xp SP2. Other downloads from MS, virus software etc, always complete ok even if 20 meg or larger. I tried Changing privacy , Security settings to Medium, this did not help, Any help appreciated

I assume the link is opening with Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) in your web browser? Try saving the link (right click and save target or save link) and then opening the file from your hard disk.

So you please delete the "Adobe" folder in the program files folder and then reinstall the Adobe program again. This should solve your problem mostly.

I stupidly uninstalled msgr7 and downloaded 8.1 then installed same. I got stack dumps and a yahoofoundation.dll error due to my having win 98 PIII EB600 processor and installing msgr 8.1. I have a wireless radio telephone connection that the speeds are 19,200 baud at best. The .tmp file is DELETED each time you restart the download due to a dropped connection and it takes over 3 hours per download. Yahoo should do two things 1. Put the system requirements on the same page as the download link page. 2. make links for win98 users off the messenger 8.1 download page so other people can download version 7.0 Yahoo Messenger {7.0.0.242} and do not make the same mistake I did.

yahoo's system requirements for v8+ are tucked away on this page http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/tutorials/... and W98 is still support (not all features are available tho) so if you did want to try installing it agian it might be best to try to download the full exe file rather than the installer...
