Download speed of 512 kbps cable internet connection?

I'm planning to install cable internet link 512/128 (download/upload).


What is the real download potential of 512? What time does it take to download a file of 100 MB using this link?


And what time does it take to download a 1 GB file (via torrent with 20 seeders)?

To determine ur "real download potential", u just got 2 convert ur kbitsps to kBytesps.





This is simply done by dividing it by 8 (8bits=1Byte). 512kilobits per second = 64kiloBytes per second so if u do the math, a connection speed of 512 kbps would typically take 26minutes(1563sec) to get a file as large as 100MB(1 MegaByte = 1024 kiloByte ~1000 kiloByte).





As for the 1 GB torrent file, w/ torrent as just w/ any other dlding clients, the downld speed is not really that stable. So... my advice 2 u is to just look for the download speed when it starts dlding that file (no need 2 convert cuz d value it displays is KBytesps already). Then, divide 1GB(1 GigaByte = 1024 MegaByte ~1000 MegaByte) by that download speed. The result ur gonna get is basically the time in seconds it will take u 2 dld that file.

if 1 meg is 1024kb, you will download it in 20 seconds.


100 megs will be 33 minutes.





but really thats if your speed was as fast as it could go.





i have 8meg broadband. so upto 800kb a second. 1 meg in just over a second. but it depends on the remote host/server being able to upload data that fast.





with 20 or so seeders, if eash was seeding 10kbs upload, then the max it would download at is 200kbs, but as yours is only 51.2, that would be the limit

Reply:the speed waht ISPs are telling is the bandwidth. You wil get generally 1/8th of the bandwidth as the download speed.





I have 2 Mbps internet, but usually i get around 170 to 200 kbps download speed. As per the service provider, the theoritical speed should be 256 kbps.





In torrent, it depends on the person's internet and his setings how much upload speed he is limiting...





With this i think you should e able to calculate the time required for those sized data.
