-Limewire- if i download the songs. its not illegal . but only if i sell/copy on cd/distribute/use live?or No?
Downloading the files without paying for them, no matter what you plan to do with them, no matter what you use to obtain them, is illegal because the artist isn't getting paid for their work. Copyright law was created to make sure that artists get reimbursed for what they create and are therefore able to continue making art instead of having to find other ways to pay the bills. The crime is copyright infringement (do a search on it for details) and the fine is between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file illegally downloaded. What you do with the files can determine the fine. If you're downloading for personal use then you get closer to the $750.00 end. If you attempt to make a profit, it gets closer to the $150,000.00 end.

A jury in Minnesota recently found a woman guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs. They set the fine at $9,000.00 per song. It could happen to you.

As for how to tell is it's copyrighted, use some common sense. If you'd have to pay to get the CD, or to download the tracks at a legitimate store, then getting them for free is illegal.
Reply:Read.
Reply:You cannot download songs for free for any purpose at all unless the songs are being given to you by a person/organization who is legally allowed to do so (during a promotion sometimes corporations are allowed to distribute a free song etc due to some deal that was already settled with the music label).

Now the reality of it? If you're not sharing the songs you're a lower priority. They've got bigger fish to fry. Don't get it into your mind that it isn't illegal though. It's still illegal and if they felt like suing you they could.
Reply:Everything you are doing is illegal. Thats why I reported you to RIAA.

Good Luck with your trial.

Reply:Limewire itself is not illegal however they dont take repsonsibility for the material distributed to share.

So therefore if you use it for non copyrighted material you need not worry however most material has copyright and judging by the sucess of limewire, it would seem that not all files shared on the site are completly legal.

It was rumoured that after the case of MGM vs Grokster limewire began working on a program which refused to share files which lacked valid licence information.

This never happened

Wonder Why....

if you look at wikpedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LimeWire

in the crtism section you can see some of the cases brough against limewire on this issue.

Hope it helps

If your really worried use I tunes

Its only like a $1 per song and completly legal as itunes has permission of the author/artist.
Reply:downloading music without paying for it is illegal. The chances of getting taking to court is iffy! If you have limewire set to not share / upload songs, then the RIAA is PROBABLY not gonna come after you in court. Not saying the will not, but they are mostly looking for the people that are uploading / sharing the music!
Reply:if you download anything copyrighted you're breaking the law and may have to pay fines the rest of your life like Jammie in the news for $225,000

put yourself in their shoes. you're a music artist. you wanna get paid. everyone just steals your music off limewire and doesn't buy your album instead.

now you have no money to pay bills. stealing ruined your career
Reply:i think dling songs is illegal in general unless u pay for them
Reply:it's not so much the ''downloading'' it's more the ''uploading'' as with limewire you have people downloading from you so you are sharing copyrighted information weather it be music films porn pics software or whatever it's the uploading that is illegal so just try and keep your upload slots to a minimum and upload speeds rather slow yes i know people will call you a leacher but it's better than getting a fine.

::SLR:: ... hope it helps..
Reply:yes even downloadin them are illegal i think, because the artists don't make money off limewire or else they'd be mega rich. hhahahhaha.
