How Can I optimize my download speed using BitComet? Please Help!?

I am very familiar with BitComet's interface, I just don't understand the whole system, and how it works. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that BitComet downloads information from several tracker websites, and the addresses of those sites are found in the .torrent file that you open to start a task (downloading a file or directory). Then simultaneously from all those websites you start to download pieces of information that add up together to produce your finished file. Seeds are people who are downloading the same file, and you can simultaneously download pieces of information of the same file from them. Leechers are people who are downloading the same file, and they download pieces of information from you. I wish to optimize my download speeds, and I am almost positive that it can be done by tweaking the settings. Can anybody please shed some light on the subject for me?

Well, your assumption is slightly incorrect, let me try to correct it.

Seeders are people who have the COMPLETE FILE. Meaning they have already downloaded it. And are now just sharing the file they've downloaded. Leechers are people who are also downloading the file but still do not have the complete file.

There are basically no optimizations for torrents, however here are basic guides you need to follow so that your download speed won't be limited.

- First, you need to UPLOAD before you can download. Bittorent works on a principle or upload and you can download, this means if you do not upload or upload very little, you will download very little as well.

- Second, make sure your firewall allows Bittorent. If your firewall blocks direct port connections to Bittorent then your download speeds will be poor because your computer is actually blocking other people from connecting to your computer and thus blocking your downloads.

- Third, check if your ISP blocks Bittorent traffic, a lot of ISP now try to block Bittorent traffic because they think its causing them problems regarding bandwidth and the "piracy" thing. So try to search Yahoo for ISPs which throttle or block Bittorent traffic, if you discover they ARE doing that, then change your ISP, or try to enable Protocol Encyption.
Reply:OK you want ultimate speed and no viruses or fragmentation holding you back right?

step 1. go to www.PCLinuxOS.com and get the .iso file for PCLinuxOS.

step 2. burn the iso onto a disk like you are use to.

step 3. reboot and install PCLinuxOS.

step 4. use all the torrent programs you want. This OS is so fast it will knock your socks off.

step 5. wear protective gear for high speeds.
